Course Description for Demining in Ukraine

Course Description

This specialized course is designed to familiarize all participants with cutting-edge knowledge and practical skills to apply modern drone technologies in humanitarian demining operations. Developed through a partnership between HWC LLC (Ukraine) and Doring Engineering Buro GmbH (Germany), the course is tailored to meet the needs of post-conflict recovery efforts in Ukraine and other affected regions.

Purpose and Aims

The course aims to enhance national capacity in mine action through exposure to the latest UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) technologies and data-driven tools. It provides a comprehensive overview of drone-based demining systems and prepares participants to assess, deploy, and manage these solutions in field conditions.

Target Audience

  • Technical personnel in humanitarian demining operations
  • Public and private sector stakeholders involved in recovery and infrastructure
  • Students and professionals in GIS, engineering, defense, or emergency response
  • NGOs and international agencies supporting mine action

 

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Understand UAV hardware, sensor systems (LiDAR, GPR, magnetometers), and software used in demining
  • Compare commercially available platforms and their capabilities
  • Analyze the potential and limitations of drone-based vs. traditional demining methods
  • Explore AI, GIS, and remote sensing applications in minefield mapping
  • Conduct scenario-based planning and develop business cases for UAV integration

  • Module 6: Feasibility Analysis, Cost Structure, and Cost-Benefit Analysis
  • Module 7: Operational Deployment – Standards, Protocols, and Case Studies
  • Module 8: Future Trends, R&D Initiatives, and Practice Needs

The course includes recorded lectures, live instruction, lab training, self-study, and case work. It can be delivered as an intensive 2-week full-time program or over 4–6 weeks in modular format. A hybrid model with in-person and online practice is also available.
